//

A SWIMWEAR LABEL FOR OCEAN LOVERS.
BOO IS SHORT FOR BLUE OCEAN OBSESSED & ALL MATERIALS ARE FROM THE OCEAN.

The brand was founded by two girls from Hanover, Germany. They both love surfing and know the struggle when the bikini wouldn’t stay in place after an intense session.
While surfing the girls also discovered other problems, such as the amount of plastic waste that floats in the sea.

At this point they decided to use their abilities to create a bikini that is better for surfing and the ocean.
Since December 2018, boo surfwear have leggings in their range.

Fabric:

boo’s clothing are sustainable and consists of the following two fibers:

boo surfwear teamed up with Econyl® to use fibers reclaimed from pre- and post-consumer waste like fishing nets, nylon straps and carpet fluff.
Also the label worked with Lycra® Extra Life, which fibers makes substances more stretchy and durable.

It also makes the bikinis and leggings resistant to UV-light, suncream and salt water. Therefore the articles of boo surfwear have a perfect fit, a soft touch that stays in the right shape for a long time.

Leggings:

The leggings are perfect for the next yoga-session or all other sporty activities.
The boo surfwear leggings with a separate hip-bag has extra flat stitching, a little crotch-inlet, extra high waistband and no side-seams.

In every position the leggings feel good and all stretches feel super comfortable. The fabric of the leggings is stretchy, quick-drying, soft on the skin and therefore also great for water sports.
The removable hip-bag is for small things like your phone, keys or money.

Supplier

After the first collection of boo surfwear and just before launching the leggings, it was time for them to make the journey to the place where their designs were made into real products.
boo surfwear intended to create a long lasting partnership. They wanted to build the brand with a reliable partner who understands the ethical and ecological values of blue ocean obsessed.

It took some time to search, but in the end boo surfwear found their supplier: A small studio (just around 50 qm) located near Shenzen, China.
The label chose a chinese production side for various reasons: first of all, they could deliver the best quality and skill, being a specialist for swimwear.
And since the founder of boo surfwear is of chinese origin herself, there were no language barriers to overcome.

Entering the studio brought back a deja-vu moment for the two founders: no matter where you are in the world, a design/sewing studio looks pretty much the same:
the big tables for cutting and pattern making, the patterns on the wall, the machines, the rolls of fabric.

Angenia, the manager, who helps the team of boo surfwear to communicate with all the workers.

Meiyuan, leader of the sewing team, who is sewing most of the boo surfwear bikinis.

Yongzhong, pattern maker, who helps boo surfwear to make the designs fit to your body.

All of them work in this studio for between 5 and 15 years and bring that skill and experience into every piece that goes through their hands.
Since the studio doesn´t have a huge amount of workers (around 15), it is easier to take care and to provide for every one of them.
Each worker has a face and a voice, too. The studio pays a wage higher than the average and have reasonable working hours.
Lunch time is important, just as finishing in time. Of course, overtime can´t be avoided, especially in the high production season for swimwear.
But these hours are being compensated and result in a higher wage.

Creating a long lasting change in the working conditions inside the fashion industry is not an easy fix and takes time.
It can only be achieved by taking one step after the other and continuously moving into the right direction.
boo surfwear wants to do this from the very beginning and recognize their responsibility as a eco-friendly swimwear-brand.
